Kaliyattam Theyam

Theyyam was lying long back in my bucket list for a long time, finally after Instragram, phone inputs planned to go to Pulimparamba, Taliparamba, Mykeel Sri Karimkutty sasthan temple,  Kaliyatam on Feb 12-13 


booked tickets to Thalassery, as one of my friend was there, planned to explore some places nearby, as a train derailed track repair was going on and railways couldn't restore the track, and my train at 6am was as also cancelled. 


Always plan B moved to KSRTC bus stand a Volvo bus to Kozhikode was there and 20 plus people waiting for the doors to be opened, go a seat ticket was a bit pricey as a budget traveller but no option


Reached Calicut by 12 got the bus to Kannur a 2.30 hrs ride

Kannur fort, St Anjelo fort was nearby about 2 kms from bus stand so took an auto to n fro, strolled around the fort and moved back to Kannur bus stand,

from there to Taliparamba and one more bus to Pulimparamba


By 6pm the Kaliyatam began with rhytmic beats of chenda a bit different to from our usual temple melams


Mykeel Sri Karimkutty Sasthan temple is a small tharavad temple with  Karimkutty Sasthan, Gulikan, Kandanar Kelan, Pottan Daivam, Vayanatu Kulavan & Kudi Veeran as dieties 


The chamayams were for Kandanar Kelan was going on, and others were also getting ready for their theyyams one after another meanwhile fire was getting ready for the next theyyam




Kandanar Kelan came first with chenda melam fast movements and circular jumps with a couple of men who were there to arrange the fireworks mainly of dry palm leaves and after some rhytmic moves Kandanar Kelan came and spread the hot 🔥 firewood embers and the men who accompanied also followed the same after this palm leaves were put on the embers and Kandanar Kelan with 2 men on both sides started jumping over the fire and one man was creating sparkles by poking the fire


Next came a man with dagger and paricha, urumi and swords with very fast movements with all this weapons


Kudi Veeran came next with slow moves  with an array of lamps lit 


Annadanam and prasadan was not distributed because of Covid protocols, but food was supplied for some got a good sadya 


Pottan Daivam came next fire was lit long back seems from midnight embers were spreaded and fire logs which were not burnt were removed, sunlight has come and Pootan Daivam was performed in early morning Pottan Daivam just relaxed on the hot embers with crossed for long time

Vayanutu Kulavan & Gulikan came last 10 am 






Karimkutty Sasthan, Pottan Daivam & Vayanatu Kulavan was giving blessings and giving solutions for all problems for the worshippers


Uppuma and Sambar for breakfast moved to Taliparamba, Kannur by bus and  to Calicut by train , reached home on Monday

Madhuve (wedding ) @ Mysuru
